Bow Ties (F2-3, R2)

photo of a knitted bow tie

This is either a set of snazzy bow ties or a set of snazzy bows. It all depends on your intentions and/or how much elastic you have lying around.

You Will Need:

  • double knit yarn
  • 4 x double ended knitting needles (3.25mm)
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • elastic (optional)

Patterns:

Follow the links below for knitting patterns.

Making Up:

By now you have one big rectangle that will form the loops of the bow, and one small rectangle that will form the centre.

Fold the loops along their length such that the neatest side of your knitting is on the outside. Sew a few stitches through the top half of the centre of the fold to hold it in position.

Fold each half in half again to make a 'W' shape. Fix it in position with a few more stitches all the way through the centre.

Wrap the knitted centre around the middle of the loops to hide the sewing up. Sew the ends of the centre together and lose any remaining loose ends.

If you're planning on wearing the bow tie cut a piece of thick elastic that fits around your neck (make sure it's a comfortable fit). Thread one end through the back of the centre loop. Fix the ends of the elastic together firmly. They will need to stay attached as you stretch it over your head and position it under your collar.

Notes:

Needle/Yarn Size

As with most ODDknit patterns the yarn and needle sizes in the "you will need" section are just a guide. Feel free to improvise with whatever needles and yarn you have lying around - that's half the fun!
